How to keep a black tee black

Black cotton jersey, close up

Black cotton fades for three reasons: heat, friction and too much detergent. Take those three away and a black tee stays dark for far longer.

1. Turn it inside out

Most fading is the outside of the fabric rubbing against everything else in the drum. Inside out, the face of the tee and the chest wordmark are protected, and the inside takes the wear instead.

2. Wash cool, with darks

The care label says up to 40°. That’s the limit, not the target. A 30° wash gets an everyday tee clean and is gentler on the dye. Wash with other dark colours so nothing pale picks up lint or colour.

3. Use less detergent than the box says

Extra detergent doesn’t clean more. It stays in the fibres and leaves a dull, greyish film that reads as fading. Use a little, and a detergent made for dark colours if you have one. Never bleach.

4. Skip the tumble dryer

Heat is the fastest way to age cotton. Shake the tee out, pull it gently back to shape and dry it flat or on a hanger. Keep it out of strong direct sun, which can fade dark colours.

5. Iron cool, on the reverse

If it needs a press, use a cool iron with the tee still inside out. Never iron straight over the wordmark.

The short version: inside out, 30°, darks only, a little detergent, no dryer. The same habits keep White crisp and Forest deep.

One tee, four ways

Black tee styled with denim and boots

The Signature Tee is cut the same in every colour, so the colour does the work. Here is where each one is happiest.

Black, the easy one

Black goes under everything: an open overshirt, a blazer, a denim jacket. With mid-blue jeans and boots it looks sharp without trying. It’s the one to pack for a trip when you can only take one.

White, the clean one

White is all about contrast. Wear it with black trousers and loafers, or tuck it into wide-leg linen on a hot day. Keep the rest of the outfit simple and let the white do the talking.

Charcoal, the soft one

Charcoal sits between black and white, so it works with both. Try it with stone or olive chinos, or wear grey on grey with a lighter pair of trousers for an easy tonal look.

Forest, the quiet statement

Forest is the least expected colour in the range. It pairs well with cream, navy and washed black. Try it with off-white trousers and white trainers when you want something a little different from the usual black.

Start with Black, add White, then let Forest surprise you.

Why five per cent stretch

All four colours on the rack

The Signature Tee is 95% cotton and 5% spandex. Most of what you feel is the cotton. The spandex is what you notice later.

Cotton is soft, breathable and comfortable against skin, which is why it has been the fabric of the T-shirt for a century. On its own, though, cotton jersey stretches as you wear it and only partly comes back. Collars loosen, elbows of sleeves bag, and the hem starts to wave.

Spandex, also known as elastane or Lycra, is an elastic fibre that can stretch several times its length and return. Blended in at a small amount, it doesn’t change how the tee feels so much as how it behaves. It moves with you when you reach or sit, then pulls the fabric back into shape.

Why not more?

More stretch starts to feel like sportswear: smoother, slicker and warmer. Five per cent keeps the dry, matte hand of a cotton tee while giving it enough recovery to keep its shape from morning to night, and from one wash to the next.

Care tip: spandex dislikes heat. Skip the tumble dryer and the tee keeps its stretch for longer.

Inside the box

Frosted bag, dust bag, hang tag and thank-you card

A tee you wear every week deserves a better arrival than a crumpled courier bag. Here’s what you’ll find, in the order you’ll find it.

  1. The frosted zip bag. Your tee is folded and sealed so it reaches you clean and flat. Keep the bag for travel.
  2. The printed dust bag. For storing your tee between wears, or for keeping a fresh one separate in your suitcase.
  3. The signed hang tag. Every tag is signed by us before it leaves.
  4. The thank-you card. A small note from the team.

We pack this way because most people film their first unboxing. If you do, tag @_cottonculture_ with #WearYourCulture and we reshare our favourites.
